Don't sip on that protein shake while you train(as the labels may tell you). Exercising following a meal "confuses" the body.
We have a sympathetic (fight or flight) and a parasympathetic (feed n breed) nervous system. At any given time one is dominant over the other.
After a meal the body is parasympathetic dominant and is focused on digestion. Amongst other things effected is the circulatory system. Blood pressure and heart rate decrease.
During exercise the body is sympathetic dominant and is focused on supplying the muscles with nutrients such as calcium, potasium, sodium, and oxygen. Blood pressure and heart rate increase. This is why if food is still in the stomach during extreme exercise, the body will expell it (we throw up).
So if we exercise too soon following a meal the body is being asked to do too much at once. This is why we cramp or vomit- it"s the body's way of telling us to wait a little longer before we exercise.
