I am a bit shocked when someone tells me that they are useing Internet Explorer. Not because i am a Mac fan, no, because IE is so horrible. Lately the competition for the browsing experience has gotten tighter. New players like Mozilla have taken a bite out of that Microsoft Browser monopoly.
Now Apple has thrown its hat in the no more IE game, by introducing Safari for Windows. Matt Mondok from arstechnica, catches the competition responding to the news.
Todd Bishop, Mozilla:
--"It's hard to predict what will happen with market share but we are excited to see the resurgence of interest in browsers. The availability of Safari on Windows reinforces the importance of browsers as critical components of today's Internet experience. Mozilla's mission is to promote an open, interoperable and participatory Internet. We encourage Apple to put their weight behind open standards and the open Web to help ensure all browser users, regardless of operating system or browser, can enjoy the best possible Web experience."--
Kevin Kutz, a Windows
--"With hundreds of millions of Windows users, it's not a surprise that a company that makes web browsers would want it to work with Windows. We're glad our customers have a choice in browsers, and we think that Internet Explorer 7 is the best available."--
Two totally different tones on how each company perceives the news of the new Browser. This for me is the kind of arrogance that allows Firefox to encroach on Microsofts territory. As well as providing Safari a fighting chance on the "hundreds of millions of Windows" The public needs options, and it is proving it self to be the case that when the public finds another option, they move away from IE. Microsoft has done an excellent job at making Windows the standard the world over. But it's this arrogance that has lead to the rise of competing OS's and and now Browsers. At one point Ford and US auto manufactors were the only way to go when buying a car. Look what arrogance has done to that American industry.
Yes, at the moment there are some bugs in the system, but they will get worked out, and more and more computer users will discover how great a browser Safari really is. This may be the overstatement of the year, but this seemingly small insignificant move by Apple has put the whole Windows dynasty on notice, and that boastful claim instead of call to action and improvement, will shrink those number drastically. And then like Japan before them, Google, Yahoo, Linux, Mozzilla and Apple will completely take over a market ruled by a boastful arrogant leader.
