That killer toothpaste is in the news again. This from Marketwatch.
--"There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain diethylene glycol," a poisonous chemical, the New York consumer-products giant said in a statement.
The company "does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world." The counterfeit toothpaste is labeled "Manufactured in South Africa," the company said. Colgate-Palmolive said it does not import toothpaste into the U.S. from South Africa.
In addition, it said, "the counterfeit packages examined so far have several misspellings including: "isclinically", "SOUTH AFRLCA" and "South African Dental Assoxiation."
The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration "to help to identify those responsible for the counterfeit product," Colgate-Palmolive said.
Colgate's toll-free number for consumers is 1 800 468-6502.
The FDA has been warning consumers since late May that diethylene glycol had been found in certain toothpastes imported from China into a number of countries. The agency has urged consumers to throw away toothpaste labeled as made in China.
And the FDA has issued an Import Alert, blocking Chinese toothpaste containing the chemical from entering the U.S. Diethylene glycol is used in antifreeze and as a solvent, FDA says.
It's "been improperly used as a low-cost substitute for glycerin and proplylene glycol in pharmaceutical preparations," which have in turn poisoned and killed people worldwide, the agency said in an updated Import Alert dated June 8.
What this article neglects to inform is this toothpaste has killed 51 people.
