Some movie are so unique your not really sure how to categorize them. This week's foreign flick, Shaun of the Dead, does just that. Shaun and Ed are the quintessential London slackers. Well, at least Shaun has a job, Ed's a total mooch. They spend their time drinking and singing the rap and rock songs of their youth, and doing nothing that will bring this extended adolescence to an end. Shaun's immaturity has gotten him sacked by his girlfriend. His distress has caused him to miss the news that zombies are walking the streets of London and taking lots of victims. Sound like a typical set-up for what has become a long dead genre - the zombie pic. But its so much more than that. Its hard to tell whether the film is funnier than it is scary or vice versa. What to do when zombie ghouls have closed in and are ready to pounce for the kill? This movie's answer is to ignore the problem and jump into a sitcom stupid argument about some mundane issue. At its heart Shaun of the Dead is a love story - love between boyfriend and girlfriend, and love between friends. But all around that heart it is a riotously funny scary zombie movie. And that's a good thing.
