No, no, a thousand times NO!!!!
Ed Hardy has a post that suggest my "must have" phone is only going to be available via AT&T. His hypothesis is on the verge of ruining my day.
The iPAQ 910 Business Messenger was announced early this month, along with four other iPAQs. But, unlike the other new models, this Windows Mobile 6 smartphone hasn't been listed on HP's web site, even as "coming soon".
This might be because this is the only one of these that HP isn't going to offer directly to customers, and instead will sell it through a wireless carrier.
Here's my rebuttal to the speculation. (It's called self-soothing for all the psych majors.)
First, regular readers know I am with AT&T so Ed's speculation about the phone only being offered on AT&T isn't necessarily the end of the world. What has me concerned however is what kinds of secret "homebrew" AT&T is going to put on the phone to cripple utilize Windows Mobile 6 for their network. That has me really concerned.
What carriers often do is strip out features of the OS and replace them with their own that you have to then pay for. I think whatever is built in to the OS should stay that way. Carriers, obviously, have always had a different opinion and have historically gone to great lengths to take features out (especially Windows Mobile) as opposed to the other way around. Since Microsoft has yet to pull an Apple and make their own phone, they are beholden to whatever the manufacturer, and then the carrier, decide the end user should be able to use.
I am of the opinion an unlocked phone is always better than what you get from the carrier. You might pay more, but you don't have to worry about what secret concoction the carrier has done to cripple your phone. Most manufacturers tend to do very little to interrupt the end user functionality.
And while the 910 hasn't been listed as "coming soon" as the other devices have (I know, I check the site twice a day, every day), I am still of the opinion it is to get rid of the inventory for the hw6920/6925 that are currently running Windows Mobile 5 and being offered on the cheap via a $150 rebate.
I don't believe HP is offering an upgrade for the hw6920/25 to Windows Mobile 6 so the two devices won't compete with the newer 910. If they were to upgrade the hw6920/25 to Windows Mobile 6, even I would have a hard time making a choice because I like the design of the hw6920/25 (a much bigger screen and larger phone overall - hey, not everybody likes teeny-weeny phones!) but the 910 is very modern, classy looking device IMHO.
But it doesn't look like a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade is in the works for the hw6920/25 and I'd be perfectly happy with the 910.
HP, some clarity please? Release dates? Plans? More accidently on purpose leaked info? That sorta thing. I need something to keep hope alive.
