Okay here's the story. Those of you who know my affinity for Apple products know that I have wanted Apple to make a phone for years. I called on Apple to buy Palm and create a better Treo over and over again. At the time I felt Palm started a good thing with the Treo, but Apple could take it and make it better. Of course that didn't happen. What did happen is the iPhone. I was extremely unhappy that Apple went with AT&T, so much so that although I do a lot of reporting on the iPhone, I avoid it like the plague.
Since I am already aware of the fact that Apple makes great product, it comes to no surprise to me that so many are loving their iPhones. But to spare myself the pain I elected to stay away, keeping any temptation to join the dark side (AT&T), or anything with EDGE as a network at bay. Well that little plan went down the tubes this weekend.
No, I didn't join the dark side of the force, but I did take a chance and played around with the phone that Steve made. I am here to tell you, that in my personal opinion the iPhone is hands down the best phone/device/mobile web handheld gadget I've ever laid my eyes on.
One of the first things that threw me was the complaint that I had heard so often, it's hard to type on. Why? I was two thumb typing within seconds of holding it. If you can type on a Treo, you can type on an iPhone. To see Safari open this site in it's entirety was awe inspiring. Okay, I'm being dramatic but remember I use Blazer. I can only imaging the thrill it must be to run all the new third party apps that have been created for the iPhone, because the screen is so incredibly vibrate you just want to look at stuff on it. I always thought the Treos 320x320 screen kicked every other phones rear end. But my Treo screen is just a good 24" tube television screen compared to the 52" Flat screen LCD iPhone.
Believe me, I knew this was the case, but I didn't know it first hand, and now I'm even more angry with Steve for going with AT&T, for FIVE FREAKIN YEARS!!!!
If the iPhone was made for both networks no other phone would stand a chance, oh, and if it were a bit cheaper.
And this may hurt a lot of delicate feelings but, the Zune, please. Microsoft should just drop it. They were having a hard enough time with the iPod as a competitor, the iPod Touch is so far out of their league it's ridiculous. It's the iPhone without the phone. Everything that makes the iPhone the best damn phone ever, is on the iPod Touch sans the phone. And it's paper thin, well okay cardboard thin.
These two entries by Apple set the bar so high that even Apple will have a hard time reaching it. There isn't a device out there or one that I can see coming in the near future that is as beautiful and as advanced as these two devices, even if they have a few more features on them. I really wish I stuck to my guns and avoided them, more so the iPhone. And to think that it will get better is hard to believe.
