While it is truly wonderful to see BoyGenuis Report giving a video walk through of the Windows Mobile 6.1 they got a hold of on Monday, they have also set off a firestorm of question over their reported Motorola Q9 with WiFi.
Here's what they said at the bottom of their video demonstration of Windows Mobile 6.1:
P.S. For anyone thinking on holding off on an AT&T Q9 because of the Wi-Fi version coming, remember that this device is running a non-AT&T OS, and although it is AT&T-branded hardware, it doesn't mean AT&T has actually picked it up, nor do we have any launch indication or supposed release timeframe.
I've been lighting up their comments section asking for some confirmation of this reported phone and the above statement brings up more questions than it answers.
How did they manage to get an AT&T branded Motorola Q9 that isn't running the AT&T version of Windows Mobile? There are none of the standard crapware apps that ship with AT&T phones. There is no word from BGR on whether this came from Motorola, AT&T, Microsoft or the cell phone fairy.
And who the heck is "Cigular Wireless"?
If you watch the video which I've linked below, you'll see "Cigular" and AT&T change during their video demonstration of Windows Mobile 6.1.
As a recent Motorola Q9h purchaser, I'd really like to know if Motorola / AT&T is going to pull an Apple and release a better device so soon after the initial release or is this some guy who flashed the ROM and left it on BGR's doorstep to try and fool us all.
In their defense, BGR has broken many stories on new cell phones coming to market and I don't believe for a moment they are responsible for trying to create this hoax. I know they may have sources to protect but the initial post implied this phone arrived out of the blue with no warning.
Again, inquiring minds want to know.
Because I know you are wondering, here's Windows Mobile 6.1 in action running on the mysterious Motorola Q9. Windows Mobile 6.1 looks REALLY nice.
How BG gets these devices is anyone's guess -- rumor is that he's got plenty of money and will pay for leaked devices. Companies like Motorola always have a few prototypes floating around and some get away. I think this phone is for real, but probably not tomorrow. When was the last time you heard of a newly-released Motorola phone that you hadn't waited a while for?

What I find amusing is the fact that Cingular Wireless is misspelled as Cigular, and that AT&T wouldn't be using that name brand at this point anyway.

While the wi-fi of the Q9H is intriguing, I am more curious as to a Q9C release on Verizon. Has anyone heard any additional information since the "fall lineup" reports that included the Q9C as a Q4 release?

Thanks for the question rss1933.
But, I hate to tell you, there will not be a Q9c for Verizon.
Verizon popped Motorola's collar with the Q9M, a slightly slimmer but mostly similar variant of my beloved Q9h and what will be the Q9c on Sprint.
You should be able to walk into any real Verizon store and walk out with the Q9m now.
Unless you specifically want the Q9c for use on Verizon since they are "open" and all now.
Only real difference with the Q9M is the color, slightly slimmer, (that it runs on Verizon), and a little Windows Mobile "homebrew" action with the home screen.
Motorola has changed much of the SOP of Windows Mobile 6 by adding their homebrew then Verizon slipped in some ingredients as well.
Check it out and post back what you decide: to snag a Q9M or wait for Sprint and the Q9c to test the openess of Verizon?
